Puget Sound State and tribal fishery managers agreed May 26 on 2016’s salmon fisheries for Puget Sound. Changes from 2015 include: Fishing will be closed on the following rivers during September and October to protect coho: Skagit, Cascade, Snohomish, the mainstem Stillaguamish, Green and Nisqually. Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish will also be closed to fishing in September and October. The Puyallup River will be closed to recreational salmon-fishing this year. The Carbon River will open for 15 days to recreational salmon-fishing in which anglers may keep up to two hatchery chinook. The Snohomish River, however, will be open to fishing for hatchery chinook salmon June 1 through July 30. Anglers can retain two hatchery chinook, plus two sockeye, when fishing in marine areas 5 (Sekiu) and 6 (East Juan de Fuca Strait) from July 1 to Aug. 15. Anglers fishing in Marine Area 7 (San Juan Islands) in July can retain two salmon including two hatchery chinook (but must release coho and wild chinook) and can retain one hatchery or wild chinook in August and September as part of their two salmon daily limit. Ticket Price is $60. First Prize winner will receive $7500 Second Prize $2500 Third Prize $1000 Our 12th Annual Derby will be held July 8-10th, 2016. Last year, our club sold over 400 adult tickets and 60 kids’ tickets. The tickets were available at LFS, Yeager’s, Dave’s Sports in Lynden and Holiday Sports in Burlington. Great merchant donations were received from many of our local Bellingham merchants which created an excellent basis for awards to many fishermen (kids and adults) who entered fish in the competition. We had fish weigh-in stations at Deer and Squalicum Harbor. 199 fish were caught-156 by adults and 43 by kids. In the adult category, the winning fish, weighing 26.38 lbs., was turned in by Dale Nelson earning him the $5,000 first prize. This was followed closely by Steve Eastwood with his 26.26 lb. salmon and Don Wood at 24.74 lbs. Steve and Don were awarded $2,500 and $1,000 respectively.
In the kid’s derby, the competition was extremely close with first prize going to Morgan Pease with a 19.90 catch followed by Kaylee Melton at 19.48 lbs. and Alexandra Holman at 19.24 lbs. Morgan, Kaylee, and Alexandra were given the opportunity to select some very nice prizes from a large array of prizes that every kid attending the awards ceremony on Sunday had their eyes on. Every kid who fished the derby received a prize.
In addition, two secret weight prizes of $1,000 and $500 were awarded respectively to Kaylah Reid for a 12.6 lb. salmon and Kelly Turgeon for a 6.24 lb. salmon. The $1000 secret weight prize money was donated by Environmental Insulation. And finally, Craig Hougen’s 20.68 lb. entry won him the $500 Kathy Kaiser Memorial Award.
Two raffles were also a part of the derby. Kyle Linderman was the lucky winner of the 4 day/3night all-expense paid dream fishing trip for two to Queen Charlotte Lodge in British Columbia. And Lynda Kozak won the Scotty electric downrigger.
